$32,000 in Scholarships AWARDED TO STUDENTS ACROSS Australia

This year RSL Australia will distribute $32,000 in education-based Scholarships to deserving students throughout Australia.

We are proud to announce the four recipients of the RSL Scholarship and Reg Sanders Scholarship for 2022 which are awarded to children and grandchildren of Australian ex-serving veterans.  We look forward to seeing these students prosper in their chosen fields alongside the four recipients from previous years’ nominations who continue their studies supported by RSL Scholarships.

Reg Saunders Scholarships

The Reg Saunders Scholarship was established as a tribute to the accomplishments and service of Captain Reginald Saunders as the first Aboriginal person to be commissioned as an officer in the Australian Army; a significant accomplishment at a time when Aboriginal people were subject to heavy discrimination.

Reg Saunders was a highly respected soldier and leader who served in WWII and later in the Korean War as a captain in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. During the last 20 years of his life, Reg worked with the former Department of Aboriginal Affairs. He was held in excellence by both officers and men and went on to be awarded an MBE in 1971.   Importantly, he offered proof to future generations of Indigenous Australians that the seemingly impossible could be achieved.

This Scholarship is awarded to an Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander child or grandchild of an Australian veteran pursuing an area of study or a profession that will benefit their community. The two nominated recipients will each receive $4000 towards their studies.
