The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide
The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide has published the Final Report, including 122 recommendations, which form the Royal Commission’s blueprint for real, meaningful and long-lasting reform.
Now, we must work together to address this national tragedy.
The RSL has offered its support and expertise to help inform the Australian Government in its considerations and development of a response to the final report and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.
National President Greg Melick has written to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese advising that as the nation’s largest ex-service organisation, the RSL stands ready to leverage its considerable skills, expertise and lived experience to help the Government develop and deliver a comprehensive response to the Royal Commission’s final report.
The RSL has also highlighted seven recommendations in particular that we would like to see implemented quickly as they will have a significant positive impact on current and former serving members and their families. These recommendations are:
Recommendation 81: DVA to fund a program to support members’ wellbeing during transition to civilian life.
Recommendation 87: Establish a new agency to focus on veteran wellbeing.
Recommendation 88: Develop a national funding agreement on veterans’ wellbeing.
Recommendation 89: Establish a national peak body for ex-service organisations.
Recommendation 99: Improve compensation advocacy.
Recommendation 101: Give Department of Veterans’ Affairs clients more choice and autonomy.
Recommendation 122: Establish a new statutory entity to oversee system reform across the whole Defence ecosystem.

RSL Australia: Harmonisation of Legislation - Sep 22
The RSL strongly supports the need for harmonisation of veterans’ entitlements legislation. Our experience in providing claims advocacy services for veterans means the organisation is very aware of the unintended consequences of the complex array of legislation administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. We need to achieve an outcome that preserves benefits for veterans overall but also achieves a simplified, ‘user-friendly’ system to provide timely assistance to veterans in need.
-
RSL Australia: Interim Report Response - Sep 2022
The urgent and immediate recommendations contained within the Interim Report released by the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide are sensible, significant, and vital.
