2025 Federal Election

Labor, The Greens and the Coalition’s messages for the Defence and Veteran Community

In what could be a tight election race, RSL Australia invited party leaders and key portfolio spokespeople to record a short video for the Defence and veteran community about what their party will do to improve the lives of current and former service personnel and their loved ones, if they are elected.

We asked…

  1. What are your top priorities when it comes to implementing the recommendations of the Royal Commission?

  2. How will your party ensure veterans and their families receive the advocacy support they require?

  3. How do you and your party plan to eliminate barriers to essential healthcare for veterans and their families?

  4. Can you commit to adequate funding and resources for DVA to ensure there isn’t a recurrence of the claims backlog?

  5. In these turbulent times, how will your party ensure we are prepared to meet current and future national security challenges?

These five key issues are highlighted in our paper, Investing in our veterans: RSL’s Five Priority Requests to Candidates, which was sent to politicians in early April, providing background on these issues and advocating for action.

Here’s what they had to say:

Labor

Labor provided a video and a written response.

The Greens

The Greens provided a video response.

The Coalition

The Coalition provided a written response.

Recognising their tremendous sacrifice, it is a national imperative to ensure veterans, and their families, receive the support they need and deserve. Whatever the outcome of this election, RSL Australia expects strong, decisive leadership and an enduring commitment from the major parties, as well as crossbench MPs and senators, to ensure the Royal Commission’s recommendations are fully implemented.
