Veterans invited to sail with “Wheels on waves” when it visits australia

Wheels on Waves is the first fully accessible round-the-world sailing tour. From 2023 to 2025 the purpose-built Italian catamaran Lo Spirito di Stella will sail the world with veterans and wounded, injured or ill Defence personnel from the visiting countries.

Lo Spirito di Stella is the first in the world to be completely accessible. It was created to make anyone, regardless of their physical, sensorial, or cognitive abilities, feel an active part of navigation. Wheels on Waves aims to allow people of different cultures and abilities, disabled and non-disabled, to share the experience of sailing.

It will visit three ports in Australia, and current and former serving Australian Defence Force personnel are invited to come aboard.

Supported by the Italian Ministry of Defence, the purpose of the voyage is to provide wounded, injured or ill Defence personnel around the world the opportunity to sail, promote goodwill among military personnel in different countries and thank them for serving their respective nations.

Opportunities to sail will be available while in port or when the vessel is transiting between Australian ports.

Once on board, participants will not incur costs, but they will be responsible for the cost of getting to and from the vessel.

The Lo Spirito di Stella will be in port on the below dates:

  • Brisbane - HMAS Moreton: 09 - 13 August 2024

  • Cairns - HMAS Cairns: 26 August - 03 September 2024

  • Darwin - HMAS Coonawarra: 24 September - 06 October 2024

Applicants are asked to register their interest at least four weeks before their intended sailing date. Applications by carers are also welcomed.
