RSL Monitoring Possible Gaza War Graves Damage

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) is monitoring possible damage to Australian graves in the Gaza War Cemetery. 

The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and comprises graves of Australian and other Commonwealth servicemen killed in the First and Second World Wars.  

The cemetery is maintained by a dedicated local team, all of whom are based in Gaza. The current head gardener is the fourth generation in his family to serve in the position, beginning with his great-grandfather, who first took up the role over 100 years ago.

There have been unverified reports of damage to some graves, however the current conflict between Israel and Hamas makes it impossible to confirm this.  

The RSL says the situation in Gaza is tragic, and it wishes to see the release of hostages and an end to the fighting as soon as possible. 

The League understands that there has been no direct targeting of the cemetery but remains concerned at the potential for damage. 

The RSL will continue to monitor the situation and maintain liaison with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Australian Government.
