RSL Calls on Australians to Mark Remembrance Day
MEDIA RELEASE
The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) has called on Australians to again pause this Thursday, 11 November 2021, to remember and honour those who have sacrificed in serving our nation.
In a national video message to mark Remembrance Day, RSL Australia President Greg Melick urged people to pause for one minute’s silence to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of veterans, and he encouraged Australians to continue to strive for the peace service personnel so bravely fought for.
He was joined in the message by RSL Ambassadors and veterans, Cherisa Pearce and Pete Rudland who spoke of the deep commitment and personal cost to those killed or injured in protecting the freedoms enjoyed by all Australians.
Greg Melick said the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month occupied a special place in Australia’s history as well as for so many nations globally.
“On November 11, 1918, the guns of Europe fell silent and after four years of bitter fighting, the Great War was finally over,” he said.
“That date is now observed as Remembrance Day and this year, let us again pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of all those who have served in our Defence Forces over the years.
“For more than a century, the RSL has served its members, our nation’s veterans and their families and strongly supported the defence and wellbeing of Australia.
“So, it is appropriate and right all Australians join at that time to remember.
“Lest we forget.”
