Opposition Promises on Veterans and Defence Positive, But More Detail Needed.

MEDIA RELEASE

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) says Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s Budget-reply promises to maintain veteran services and boost Defence funding are positive, but more detail is needed.

While the Opposition Leader promised a Coalition Government would support veterans and frontline Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) services, support and retool the Australian Defence Force (ADF), and invest in Defence industries, the Defence and veteran community will be looking for more detail and confirmation of these pledges during the election campaign.

RSL Australian National President Greg Melick said while Mr Dutton foreshadowed potential public sector cuts but not to frontline DVA and Defence services, the veteran community would hold the Opposition to this commitment.

“Resources will be required to fully implement the recommendations of the Royal Commission in Defence and Veteran Suicide, to continue to reduce veterans’ claims, and to enhance the capability of the ADF and this will not be possible with fewer frontline staff,” Greg Melick said.

“We welcome the Opposition’s $3 billion commitment to raising the fourth squadron of F35s fighter jets that the Labor Government had cancelled, and the promise that Defence spending would be increased to match the more dangerous strategic circumstances Australia now faces, but would like to see a specific percentage of GDP figure that matches the need and the spending of other nations.

“Importantly, Mr Dutton also emphasised Australia’s energy requirements including his plans for nuclear energy from 2035 and improving gas supply. This should be a key part of our national preparedness and establishing strategic fuel and energy reserves.”

Greg Melick said almost one in 20 Australian families includes someone who is currently or has previously served in our Defence Forces. Based on the 2021 Census, this totalled more than 580,000 Australians.

“During the course of the election campaign, the Defence and veteran community will be looking for more detail from both the current Government and Opposition on key issues impacting the sector.

“Investing in the health and wellbeing of veterans, Defence personnel and their families and in the Australian Defence Force is a sound investment for all Australians and the RSL stands ready to work with the incoming Australian Government in better serving those who serve and have served us,” he said.
