31st Annual Commemoration National Merchant Navy War Memorial, Kings Park Canberra
INVITATION FROM THE NATIONAL MERCHANT NAVY:
Sunday 23 October 2022
Following the cancellation, due to COVID Restrictions, in 2000/2021, we are so pleased, to be able to welcome back to Canberra, the Merchant Navy Community & all those organisations & individuals, who support our:
Vision Statement: To ensure that the Australian Merchant Navy “A title emblazoned in battle and honoured in freedom” is recognised as an important part of Australian Maritime History and Social Culture.
Primary Objective: Honouring the memory of Australian Merchant Navy Mariners who gave their lives in the service of their country in World Wars I and II and giving thanks for those that were able to return to their families.
We apologise for the later than usual, advice of details and do hope, you will be able to join in this important Commemoration, of respect & recognition.
For those who were not able to attend, the 30th Commemoration & the Unveiling, of the extensive New & Remedial Works, to the Memorial, on 20 Oct 2019, it will also be an opportunity, to see what was achieved by the significant financial support of so many individuals and organisations. The centrepiece of the work was the:
INSTALLATION IN BRONZE ON THE NATIONAL MERCHANT NAVY WAR MEMORIAL, KINGS PARK CANBERRA OF THE NAMES & RESPECTIVE SHIPS OF THE 862 AUSTRALIAN MERCHANT MARINERS THAT SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN WWI (184) & WWII (678).
As a result of that support, the National Merchant Navy War Memorial, now records for the generations that follow, the individual names of those who demonstrated such cold courage and heroism, in taking merchant ships into harm’s way.
We do hope you may be able to attend.
